In her debut collection, Sugar Rush, the designer found inspiration in the beauty of modern medicine, and the duality between balance/imbalance and strength/fragility that coexists within our own bodies.
The prints used throughout the collection are based on high resolution 3D images of certain parts inside of the human body, captured by a scanning electron microscope.
Sugar Rush, the title of the collection, is a reference to the hyperglycaemic state that diabetic patients can experiment when an excessive amount of glucose circulates in their blood plasma. The concept of the body attacking itself and diabetes sufferers still craving sugar, which could be fatal for them, resonates with wider theories on society’s inclination towards auto destructive practices, and its craving for instant pleasures.
The mood of the collection is sweet but dark, like a sugar coating hiding the fragile nature of human life.
These ideas have been expressed through the use of flounces and gathering, which adds fluidity and volume to the garments, in a delicate and feminine way. The collection also features round surrounding shapes on the outerwear pieces, and clever draped lines, flattering to a woman’s body on the dresses.
The designs are presented in a selection of high quality cotton, sand washed silk and silk organza. Contrasting with these natural materials the accessories have been made using translucent latex and clear acrylic plastic. The collection introduces a new technique too, in which small cuttings of printed or dyed cotton are merged with a base of organza using a needle punching machine. The final result resembles a rough, mosaic like, dense texture, which contrasts with the sheer nature of the organza.
